The Terrifying incident when an Air indian Aeroplane crashed into a canteen.
The BJ Medical College's residential dorm was bustling with students enjoying lunch on a warm Thursday afternoon.
The sound of jokes, friend banter, and the occasional scholarly conversation filled the room.
At least thirty-five persons were at the cafeteria by 13:39 local time. While some were waiting in line for their turn, others had already gathered their food and were relaxing.
Doctors and relatives mixed with the students. Then everything was different.
The sound of approaching jet engines cut through the canteen's overall buzz, and then the place exploded.
Just 1.5 kilometers (4,800 feet) away, Flight AI171 had taken off from the runway at Ahmedabad's airport less than a minute earlier. With 242 passengers, the Air India 787 Dreamliner was headed for London.
However, something had gone horribly wrong, and the jet was in peril just seconds after its wheels lifted off the ground. Before it crashed into a crowded residential area on top of the physicians' hostel, a mayday call was received. This caused a huge fireball to shoot into the air, killing everyone on board save for one.
In order to piece together what happened in those dreadful few seconds, the BBC has spoken to eyewitnesses, including students who were in the hostel, as well as friends of the trainee doctors who perished and their lecturers.
Those on the ground close were unable to figure out what had happened right away.
"We initially believed it to be lightning. However, we questioned whether that was feasible in dry heat at 40°C.
Outside, the physicians sprinted.
At that moment, they heard some shouting: "Look, come here, a plane has crashed into our building."
Before trying to physically enter the structure, the brothers and a few other local volunteers waited for the heat to pass. In order to clear some of the debris from the entrance, they collaborated with the police.
They were unable to see anyone when they arrived in the canteen.
The chamber was filled with thick, dark clouds of smoke. The scent of charred metal filled the air. To prevent any further explosions, the brothers, who had been on their way to play cricket minutes before, started taking out the cooking gas cylinders, Krish, 20, stated.
After noticing a stack of bags, the brothers and other volunteers proceeded to move them. They described what happened next as gut-wrenching.
They could see the forms of individuals behind them.
The majority were still living. Some held drinks in their hands, others held plates of food in front of them, and still others held spoons full of food.
They were all seriously hurt.
They were stunned and silent, too. They were having their typical afternoon just a few minutes before. They were now encircled by burned aircraft metal fragments.
"They didn't even get a chance to react," stated another physician in a building close by.
Ravi Thakur, who worked in the kitchen of the hostel, lived only a few kilometers away. In other hostels throughout the city, he had gone out to deliver lunch boxes. As usual, his mother remained behind.
He hurried back after hearing the news to see complete commotion. After around forty-five minutes, the area was crowded with residents, emergency personnel, firefighters, and Air India employees.
He searched but was unable to locate his mother. Teachers are still attempting to make sense of the commotion back in the main hospital unit.
