One million people are expected to live in this £80 billion megacity "ghost town."

A YouTuber who explored a hauntingly deserted megacity in Malaysia has disclosed what shocked him the most.

In theory, the £80 billion "Forest City" development in Johor, which debuted in 2016, was a fantastic idea: luxurious modern housing surrounded by an abundance of green space.

One million people were supposed to live there, but in reality, it only houses, hmm, a very small number of people.

When YouTuber Ben Morris went to look over the footage he posted in May, it appeared to be very vacant, despite their hopes that a package of policies like faster visa procedures and favorable tax rates will entice people to the development.

What went wrong with Forest City in Johor?
With barely 9,000 people actually relocating there—less than 1% of what they had anticipated—many have labeled the area a "ghost town."

Morris stated: "First, there was a significant real estate crisis in China that had an impact on both domestic and international developments.

"This had significant effects on projects like Forest City, where developers encountered significant financial difficulties and were unable to complete the work they had begun.

Last but not least, this metropolis was constructed to serve the upscale Chinese market, where buyers would acquire a secondary home overseas.

However, in order to prevent it from becoming a metropolis developed for foreigners, the former prime minister of Malaysia placed limitations on Chinese buyers' visas in the middle of construction.

"With Malaysians already being priced out of buying, this created a huge imbalance of supply against demand for the properties."

What is the real quality of the apartments in Forest City?
It's unfortunate that not many people reside in Forest City since Morris was taken aback by how lovely the residences were.

He praised one of the apartments, saying, "This is your own private floor and entrance, you can even see the bridge from your balcony."

Is Forest City truly abandoned?
The city isn't completely abandoned. There are a few thousand residents, as we mentioned, and some of them are attempting to retaliate against the designation of "ghost town."

Wafa Aina Wahid, a renter at Forest City, told CNA Insider that she chose to live there because it was so reasonably priced.

Nazmi, who rented out a one-bedroom apartment, claimed, "I managed to escape this place,"

"I didn't give a damn about the money or my deposit. I simply had to leave.

"Just being back is giving me chills. It's only you and your thoughts here, therefore it's lonely."

"To be honest, it's creepy," he continued. Despite my great expectations, I had a terrible experience here. Here, there is nothing to do.

Extra remarks by Anish Vij.

Although the $100,000,000,000 megaproject is now known as Ghost City (YouTube/Ben Morris), things clearly didn't go as planned after it started in 2016.

There was ultimately a paucity of investment from affluent buyers, in part because of reforms made to China's capital controls in 2017.

"It's speculated, the reasons behind this are down to a few different issues," Morris clarified in his YouTube video.

"First, China had a significant real estate crisis that had an impact on both domestic and international developments.
